2023 Pro Am Results

The Cathedral Course was in excellent condition and the weather was kind enough for the 40 teams of amateurs and professionals competing in the annual Pro Am tournament at the Club on Friday 4th August.  Vice President Phil Steele's dream team of Andrew Steele, President Jim Gould and PGA Professional James Ruth won the main team event in style with a 2 stroke winning margin on 16 under par.

Runners up were Neil Inder, Russell Inder, Justin Safe and SSWGC Touring Professional Tom Stagg (Tom saved the day twice by stepping in to lead a team in the morning as well as in the afternoon despite not being a PGA member. Tom's appearance was authorised by the PGA Tournament Director Charlotte Britton and SSWGC Pro Am Committee representatives who were not able to find any PGA Professionals to fill in despite best efforts being made. For the record, Tom scored 66 and 65 in the rounds he played!).

Jon Welling's team of Ash Foord, Martin Emm and PGA Pro Martyn Thompson finished third on 13 under.

The Pro Individual event was won by James Ruth (recently crowned English PGA Champion) on a terrific 5 under par, with Michael Watson second on 4 under and Jack Pope third on 3 under.

Spot prizes were won as follows:

Nearest the pins:  6th  Dominic Oxley-Thorne;  8th  Julian Wilson;  13th  Sam Elkins;  18th  Ashley Foord

Longest Drive 16th:  Cameron Young

The Charity Raffle was a great success, raising just under a thousand pounds for The Salisbury Foodbank - this was thanks to the deep generosity of all players and the persuasive powers of Hilary Thorne, Ally Ross and Di Woodward. There are still several prizes that have yet to be claimed, including the main prize of a golf bag - please contact the office with your ticket strip/s to see if you are an unsuspecting lucky winner.

Grateful thanks to the other volunteers, Brian Viney, Malcolm Vincent, Mike Witt, Chris White, Tim Hearn, Nicky Blanchard, Katherine Taylor, Pat Cliff, Ian Cliff, Mike Witt and Nigel Thorne who helped the day run smoothly by ball spotting, halfway hut hosting and hole in one witnessing (there were none this year, unfortunately). I would like to make a special mention and express my gratitude to Mel Bond for her untiring efforts in the office, providing unwavering and much needed support to the Club and to me in preparing for this event.

Salisbury Catering, fronted by Lee Donovan, provided tasty bacon rolls for everyone before play, a delicious carvery after play and kept the drinks flowing non-stop throughout the day - many thanks indeed to our relatively new bar and catering team.

Jeremy Landey was on-hand all day taking team pictures of every group on the 1st tee, action shots of every player and even the presentation ceremony which, as usual, was enthusiastically supported by many of the competitors and their guests. The photos are available to buy (download or print) here and I hope that players will support Jeremy and buy a few fab pictures of themselves or their team...
